If you’re gearing up for a family photo session on the beach, one of the most important things to get right is choosing the best colours for your outfits so that the whole family can match.

As a photographer based in Pennington on the South Coast, I’ve had the pleasure of capturing plenty of beautiful beach moments, and over the years, I’ve learned that some colours just work way better than others for beach family photography. 

Why White is a Winner

In my opinion, white is hands-down the best colour for a beach session. It’s fresh, light, and just looks amazing with the natural beauty of the beach.

Plus, white has this magical way of reflecting sunlight, which helps create that soft, glowing look—especially during the golden hour when the light is warm and dreamy.

Whether it’s a flowy white dress or a sharp white shirt, it always brings a calm, serene, and natural vibe to the photos, making it perfect for family photography.

Soft Neutrals for a Relaxed, Elegant Vibe

While white is my top choice, soft neutrals like beige, pastels and sometimes even navy can work too.

These shades complement the beach’s natural tones without overpowering the scene while keeping the focus on your family. 

Avoid Bold Patterns and Bright Colors

I love a pop of color, but when it comes to beach photos, I would recommend to rather stay away from bold patterns or neon colours.

They can clash with the beach setting or distract from your beautiful family.

Keeping things simple with light, neutral tones, and soft textures will always give you that elegant look.

Comfort is Key

You also want to feel good in what you’re wearing, especially for the beach where you’ll be walking in the sand and possibly getting your feet -possibly your whole body- wet.

Loose, breathable fabrics like cotton and linen are perfect because they keep you cool while giving off that effortless, laid-back vibe. The more comfortable you are, the better your photos will turn out!

Final Thoughts

When planning your family photoshoot on the beach here in Pennington, remember that less is more.

I recommend that the whole family wear colours that match and complement each other sticking to white, soft neutrals, and light tones as they blend beautifully with the beach and give your photos an elegant look and feel.
